Right across the border from Hyder is the town of Stewart, in British Columbia, where I’m staying along with a goodly portion of the cast and crew. A town of about 2,500 inhabitants that was much larger during the gold-rush days, Stewart had other traffic with film units before Carpenter’s entourage arrived.

Filming location for the 1982 sci-fi/horror cult classic THE THING from 1982. Filmmakers constructed a mock Antarctic camp against the backdrop of Salmon Glacier. Remains of the camp are still there, located by fans in the summer of 2003.
