In Europe, the art of stained glass reached its height between 1150 and 1500, when magnificent windows were created for great cathedrals. Most of what is known about medieval stained-glass making comes from a twelfth-century German monk who called himself Theophilus.

The earliest examples of stained glass were done for the early Christian church in the 2nd–3rd centuries CE, although none of those survived. The art was inspired by Roman mosaics and illuminated manuscripts.
Stained-glass windows, made up of coloured and painted glass pieces held together by lead strips, were especially popular in Europe in the period between 1150 and 1550, when they were a prominent feature of cathedrals and other churches, as well as city halls and homes for the elite.
