19 mar 2023 · Spey Rod Guide Spacing. After a nearly 30-year hobby building dozens (maybe hundreds) of fly rods, I'm finally building my first Spey Rod. My blank is from North Fork Composites, designated LMX FASY 1267-4 (fast); translating to 12'6" 4-piece, 7 wt, fast action rod.
Rods that are specifically built to be used as two handed overhead rods are a bit of a different breed. With them, there is a real advantage to using full ceramic guide systems. These rods are designed to throw a wide variety of shooting head, and advanced weight forward line systems.
The issue of real interest concerning guide placement on the two handed rod is where to place the guides on the rod in relation to it's functional spine. To help answer this, one should consider the dynamics involved in performing the Traditional Spey cast.
Our custom guide sets are assembled by hand one-at-a-time based on your particular rod. Please use the drop down menus and text boxes to provide as much information as possible regarding the blank you are working with and any additional considerations.

Guide spacing for spey rods is no different than for any other rod. Generally, what you are using now on your other fly rods will work just as well on your spey or two handed rod. Measure from the reel center to the stripping guide on a rod you have now that works well.
16 lut 2016 · The rod I'm building is a 12'6" 6/7 and I ordered size 3 snakes for the terminal guides. I'll be tapering down from a size 20 stripper. I based these choices on some published guide spacing charts from the internet.
