So, without further ado, here’s an idiot’s guide to writing a sonata in the Classical-style. Preparation: Before even writing a single note, give your sonata an opus number. This will validate you as a serious composer. Be careful not to label it Op. 1 though - you wouldn’t want to look like a newbie at this!
In relation to classical music, sonata means the piece is performed by an instrument typically a piano or another instrument accompanied by a piano – rather than being something that is performed vocally (the term ' cantata ' is used to describe a piece that is sung).
Anyone who plays the piano – whether professional or amateur – cannot avoid it: the piano sonata. But what exactly is it? The term “sonata” comes from Italian and has been used since the Baroque period to describe a piece of music played purely instrumentally – as opposed to the sung “canzone”.

I won't analyse their structure for you - anyone considering writing an extended piece of music is surely quite capable of doing that for themself - but note that a piece of music of any length NEEDS a structure. Use the classic Sonata Form if you will, or use something else.
