This 2D visual model illustrates the scale of the sun and planets in our solar system, and their current distance from each other.
Sun is scaled one meter (39") in diameter. Actual Size of Sun: 1,391,000 km (864,000 mi) AU (“Astronomical Unit”) is the average distance between the Sun and Earth: 150 million km (93 million mi) A little more than 100 Sun diameters will span the distance of one AU.
Making and exploring a more accurate scale model Solar System (or at least part of one) can help students and the public better understand the vastness of space and the challenges of space exploration. These are classic activities/displays for use by all: in classrooms, planetariums, museums, libraries, etc.
Have you ever wondered about the sizes of planets in the solar system or the distances between them? In this project, you will create your own scale model of the solar system by learning how to calculate scale distances, the relative sizes of planets, or both.
27 maj 2024 · A model of the solar system to scale. Originally designed for a Grade 12 project for an Earth & Space Science course to showcase the solar system. Could be painted by hand or with an MMU in PrusaSlicer to better distinguish the different planets.
Although we could print the planet sizes to scale, the paper would need to be way too large to show the scaled distances. Instead, to help you understand the sizes and distances of our solar system, we’ve created a scale model. Our Solar System, real imagery but not to scale.
Purpose: Construct a scale model of the solar system to familiarize the student with the relative sizes and positions of the planets in the solar system and the vast distances between them and between the Sun and other stars. A convenient scale has 1 foot representing 1 million miles.
