Exposing our everyday myths and narratives in a series of empirical studies that range from Watergate to the Holocaust, it shows how these unseen yet potent cultural structures translate into concrete actions and institutions.
On the other hand, from the fifteenth century onwards, a range of new ideas and new forms of social life have appeared, which will form the groundwork on which anthropology and the other social sciences will be built. Two of these new ideas have been discussed above.
This book is different. Its purpose is to lay out a research program for a cultural sociology and to show how this program can be concretely applied to some of the principal concerns of contemporary life. A great aporia marks the birth of sociology—a great, mysterious, and unexplained rupture.
