3 Methods. Experimental data collected for winter wheat during 1993 growing season at the INRA station in Auzeville, southwestern France, were used to compare the four modeling approaches (Debaeke et al., 1996). The soil was a deep silty-clay loam, with an organic matter content of 1.6% (0–30 cm).
The dry bare surface and subsurface Pewamo silty clay loam soils under CT and NT management with lower C/N ratios had relatively higher % reflectance between 350 and 2500 nm compared with NV. The dry subsurface Crosby Celina silt loam soils gave similar observations.
Loam is a mixture of clay, sand and silt and benefits from the qualities of these 3 different textures, favouring water retention, air circulation, drainage and fertility. These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide good drainage. Depending on their predominant composition they can be either sandy or clay loam.
Classifications. Loam soils can be classified into more specific subtypes. Some examples are sandy loam, silt loam, clay loam, and silty clay loam. Different soil phases have some variation in characteristics like stoniness and erosion that are too minor to affect native vegetative growth but can be significant for crop cultivation. [3]
The soil is a heterogeneous medium consisting of solid, liquid, and gaseous phases in various proportions. Plant nutrients diffuse essentially in the liquid phase only, at least in the life span of a root segment. Furthermore, part of the soil nutrients are bound to the soil matrix and as such are immobile.
Each characteristic is evaluated for limitations or hazards such as erosion, droughtiness, wetness, stoniness and response to management. The specific characteristics that most limit the sustainable use of a soil determine the land capability class.
