Impacted bowel in cats occurs when a mass of hardened fecal matter gets stuck in the rectum. Symptoms of fecal impaction are similar to symptoms of constipation. Fecal impaction can be among the causes of chronic constipation.
4 mar 2024 · The main signs, as listed above, are difficulty passing feces (straining unproductively, often with discomfort, in the litter box), as well as dullness and inappetence. Sometimes a swollen abdomen is noted, and other signs include dehydration, vomiting, and blood or mucus at the anus.
Dry, hardened feces are observed inside and outside of the litter box. Occasionally, chronically constipated cats have intermittent episodes of hematochezia or diarrhea due to the mucosal irritant effect of fecal concretions.
Megacolon is the end result of an obstructive or pseudo-obstructive condition that causes constipation, which is progressive, often resulting in incapacitating and debilitating obstipation. Megacolon may be thought of as the most advanced stage in the spectrum of chronic constipation.
Impacted colon occurs when a large amount of feces gets clogged in the colon and can’t be excreted. Sometimes, the colon loses its flexibility due to which it enlarges and is bigger than the diameter of the rectum.
The tear may involve only the surface layers of the rectum (partial tear) or penetrate all layers (complete tear). Signs may include constipation, straining, rectal bleeding, and reluctance to defecate. A diagnosis is based on these signs and inspection of the rectum and anus.
4 wrz 2023 · Laparotomy exposed a definite large bowel impaction, and enterotomy was performed to evacuate the firm feces. Postoperatively, supportive medications and care were provided for better recovery.
