The sharp (#) means that the black key is to the right of the white key and the flat (b) means that the black key is to the left on the white key. F# is, for example, the black key to the right of F and Bb is the black key to the left of B (see also Scale theory – Fundamentals ).

Here’s the order of flats in music: B, E, A, D, G, C & F. (7 flats) As the number of flats increase in the key signature, a new key is represented. Each key of music is specific to the number of flats. They’re always in the same order and they’re never mixed with sharps.
Here’s one way you can look at major music key signatures and know what keys they represent. If the signature has sharps, identify the last sharp and raise it by a semitone (half step). For instance if the last sharp is F#, raise that note by half a step.
