Use the Keyboard Viewer on Mac. On your Mac, you can display an onscreen keyboard and use it to enter text, or to show which keys you need to press on your physical keyboard to type letters with accent marks, symbols, and other special characters.
At least on macOS Sierra, there is a way to natively show keys on-screen. However there are a couple limitations/things to be aware of: it piggybacks on the "Sticky Keys" accessibility setting, which changes the way modifier keys work (you just press them, and don't have to hold them)

23 kwi 2024 · Locate the Input icon on your Mac menu bar, towards the right-hand side. It may look like a keyboard/symbol icon or it may show the flag of the language you've selected. Click on it and select Show Keyboard Viewer to view the onscreen keyboard.

Command+Option+U: Show source code and other developer options (provided Show features for developers is enabled in Settings > Advanced). Command+H: Hide Safari.

To enable the Keyboard Viewer, go to System Preferences > Keyboard, and click the checkbox next to “Show viewers for keyboard, emoji and symbols menu bar.”
