The Setouchi is where the Pacific Ocean flows through the heart of Japan and forms the Seto Inland Sea. An archipelago within the greater archipelago that is Japan, the region includes over 3,000 islands in the sea and also the coastal areas of eleven of Japan’s prefectures that border the sea.
The Setouchi region (瀬戸内地方, Setouchi chihō), or simply Setouchi, is a geographic region of Japan. Setouchi includes the Seto Inland Sea and the adjacent coastal areas of Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū, three of the four main islands of Japan.
The main transport hubs for the Setouchi Islands are Okayama, Hiroshima, and Kobe on Japan's main island Honshu, and Takamatsu and Matsuyama on Shikoku. Naoshima, Teshima, Shodoshima and the other major Setouchi art islands are most easily accessed from the ferry port in Takamatsu, just a short walk from Takamatsu Station.
