Kelp are algae that grow using the sun’s energy, much like marine seagrasses and plants on land. They are critical habitats that provide a home for other ocean life and protect coastlines. Among the kelp fronds fish, crustaceans like crabs, sea stars, and other sea creatures seek refuge from the tumultuous open ocean.
Kelp forest plants have evolved a range of adaptations to thrive in their unique underwater environment. To withstand the constant motion of the ocean, these plants have developed flexible stems and buoyant structures, allowing them to sway with the currents and waves without being uprooted.
These resources include a kelp forest slide set and script, caption cards that have pictures and descriptions of twelve common kelp forest organisms, background information and glossary sheets, a kelp forest crossword puzzle, and a book called Kelp Forests by Judith Connor and Charles Baxter.
