23 wrz 2024 · This article has highlighted the international environmental laws that could be utilised to benefit kelp forests, as well as where they have been so used. The analysis demonstrates that global regimes have been under-utilised, particularly vis-à-vis other marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and mangrove forests.

Encrusting coralline algae induces sea urchin settlement, which increases recruitment on barrens. Food-limited sea urchins constantly scour the barrens and prevent the recruitment and reestablishment of kelps.
Preventing kelp forest decline aids kelp recovery, therefore actions to ensure that kelp is not lost from a system are critical. Urchin grazing is the most frequent reason that kelp restoration is needed and also the most common cause of project failure.
