Purge masks are great for snorkelling only, I've tried to use them for scuba before and it's much much harder to equalise as the purge valve often makes it harder to pinch your nostrils if you need to. Admittedly I dive in very cold water, 5mm gloves cold, so that could also be part of it as my fingers are much fatter with the gloves.
