This is the reason why thyristors are also called silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR). An SCR, like a diode, has a high surge current capability.
SCR operating modes. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode of the SCR with respect to the cathode, and with zero gate current, the junction J2 will be reverse biased and therefore the device will not conduct. This is the forward blocking mode of SCR.
SCRs are the oldest semiconductor devices, invented by General Electric in 1957. An SCR is a four-layer device with alternating P- and N-type semiconductors, as shown in Figure 13.12 a . The basic structure is constructed by starting with a lightly doped N-type silicon wafer.
SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIER. It is a four layered PNPN device and is a prominent member of thyristor family. It consists. of three diodes connected back to back with gate connection or two complementary transistor connected back to back. It is widely used as switching device in power control applications.
