4 kwi 2022 · Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disorder of the connective tissue, characterised by increased fibrosis and vascular changes. It commonly affects the skin (this is known as scleroderma, where the skin becomes hard and thickened), but can also affect the gastrointestinal, cardiac, respiratory, and renal systems.
Scleroderma makes your body produce too much collagen, a protein that you need for healthy skin and tissue. It’s an autoimmune condition, which means your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. Scleroderma can cause lots of symptoms and affect tissue throughout your body.
In the cohort, 2084 (91%) had disease onset before age 65 and 216 (9%) at 65 years or older. Of those with late-age onset SSc, 105 (49%) had onset between 65–70 years, 68 (31%) between 70–75 years, 36 (17%) between 75–80 years, and 7 (3%) had onset at greater than 80 years of age.
