T he principal characteristic of scholarly and scientific inquiry—as opposed to informal, intuitive kinds of inquiry—is the use of rationally grounded procedures to extend knowledge that a community of scholars regards as reliable and valid.
From this description, we see that an inquiry is a procedure to enlarge knowledge, resolve doubt, or solve a problem. A theory of inquiry is an explanation of the several kinds of inquiry and an action of the means that each type of inquiry attains its object.
