Here is the video game “SimAnt”! Released in 1991 on DOS, it's still available and playable with some tinkering. It's a simulation game, set in an ecology / nature theme and it was released on Windows 3.x, Amiga, FM Towns and Sharp X68000 as well.
In the full game the player starts out as the black queen ant who must start an ant hill and produce offspring to start the first colony. They control the output of types of ants between soldiers, workers, and breeders.
SimAnt: The Electronic Ant Colony is a 1991 life simulation video game by Maxis and Maxis’s third product, focusing on ants. It was designed by Will Wright. In 1992, it was named “Best Simulation Program” at the Software Publishers Association’s Codie awards.
Gameplay. The “Sim” or micro facet. [Wandrell] Of course, you can change to another ant whenever you wish. First you are a new queen, which must build a nest. Once you have laid the first egg then you can start taking control of worker ants and fighter ants.
