I called Sallie Mae directly using their official phone number, and they said the 866 number I had been receiving calls from wasn't a number they used. I got passed around from the customer service people to the security people, but they really couldn't figure out what was going on.

If you receive an email from someone or a company, check their email address. If it looks odd or doesn’t match will previous emails you’ve received from them, odds are it’s a scam.
