If you can buy a genuine Tech 2 for a price you can stomach, go that route. Usually, though, that'll set you back a grand or two. The clone Tech 2s have all sorts of problems but most are livable or there are workarounds, and you can always buy a clone for $300 or so.

Some people report that the GM MDI interface clones (not a mongoose interface, but similar) worked better for getting Tech2Win, which is a virtual Tech2 interface working but I'd say it's unreliable and unverified so you're on your own there.
I actually found out from a gm mechanic that there's a program called tech2win that you can get that does everything the tool does. Without spending $300+. The only other thing is you need another device as a go between from the car to the pc.

10 sty 2018 · I’ve been working through the self tests and subsequent results. I have noticed a number of people comment that their tech2 fails the self test but still appears to work - there is a reason for that. Yes the tech2 is faulty - it’s just the bit that fails is not used in your car.
