During your first year, MIT will provide academic fairs, lectures, seminars, and other programs to help you determine which major will suit you best; you are then free to choose from among any of MIT’s courses of study, without any additional requirements or admission procedures.
The undergraduate program, called Course 3 at MIT, will provide you with a comprehensive education in materials science and engineering, exploring the fundamental principles of materials and how they’re used in various industries.
To achieve this diverse education, General Institute Requirements are completed by everyone at MIT no matter their area of study. They include the: Science core: six foundational courses in mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry (see these videos)
Each department offers various undergraduate degrees and minors — some even offer a flexible degree option that lets you design your own course of study. As rising sophomores, students are free to choose from all of the majors, across all the schools, without any additional requirements or admission procedures.
Here, students hurry to class yammering about quantum computing, CRISPR gene editing, and nuclear fusion — sometimes in the same conversation. MIT is nerd heaven, a place where that word implies nothing but muscle and credibility. We value merit, rigor, ingenuity, and real-world problem-solving.
