Geography. Surinam forms part of the Guianas region, located in the north eastem part of the South American continent. The Guianas are bounded in the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean, in the south by the Amazon River and the Rio Negro, and in the west by the Orinoco and Casiquiare Rivers.
The Surinam Coastline. West from the mouth of the Marowijne River the low swampy coast is fringed by a beach about 10 km long and 75 m wide. It has low dune hummocks approaching 0.5 m in elevation and a wide sloping sandy washover extending into mangroves on its landward margin.
