21 maj 2024 · In dogs, ringworm usually starts as circular areas of hair loss, or round bald spots. This is where ringworm gets its name—the main clinical sign is a “ring” of hair loss. You may see one spot or several on your dog’s skin, usually depending on when you catch it.
Ringworm on a dog looks like circular-shaped bald hair patches on multiple areas of the dog’s body including their belly. The patches typically have a crusty covering like dandruff. In serious cases, ringworm isn’t dry-looking.
Ringworm is an infection of skin, hair, or claws caused by a type of fungus. In dogs, about 70% of ringworm cases are caused by the fungus Microsporum canis, 20% by Microsporum gypseum, and 10% by Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
What does ringworm in dogs look like? In the dog, ringworm lesions usually appear as areas of hair loss (alopecia) that are roughly circular. As these circular lesions enlarge, the central area heals, and hair may begin to regrow in the middle of the lesion. The affected hair shafts are fragile and easily broken.
