Ridge push is a geological process that occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where the elevated position of the ridge causes the surrounding tectonic plates to be pushed away from the ridge and towards subduction zones.
Ridge push occurs at mid-ocean ridges where newly formed, elevated oceanic crust pushes neighboring plates apart due to gravity. In contrast, slab pull occurs at subduction zones when a denser tectonic plate sinks into the mantle, pulling the rest of the plate along with it.
3 paź 2024 · As the crust moves away from a mid-ocean ridge, it cools and becomes denser and thicker. This causes the lithosphere to slope away from the ridge and gravity pulls the lithosphere down this slope, pushing it forwards. This is known as gravitational sliding (or ridge push)
Ridge push (also known as gravitational slides or sliding plate force) is a proposed driving force for plate motion in plate tectonics that occurs at mid-ocean ridges as the result of the rigid lithosphere sliding down the hot, raised asthenosphere below mid-ocean ridges.
