Yes, they have a vaguely hierarchical structure and borrowed some military ranks, but think of it like NASA. People have titles but no one cares what they are. There are plenty of civilians mixed in. A job needs to get done, somebody does it.
But what's really grinding my gears is that rank just doesn't seem to matter anymore? Captains serving as first officers, commanders on the helm, ensigns being out in charge of the ship. Also seems like lieutenant Jr grade and lieutenant commander ranks just disappeared?
