I gave it to a friend but it still asks for their credit card info while pulling up a "subscription" menu, does this mean they're guaranteed to be charged after 2 weeks? How is this "free" in that case?

It literally is a FREE trial to nitro. You only pay if you don't cancel it before it renews, just like any other free trial. A discount would be paying for the month, but at a cheaper price than the normal one.
