The Realist movement in French art flourished from about 1840 until the late nineteenth century, and sought to convey a truthful and objective vision of contemporary life. Realism emerged in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848 that overturned the monarchy of Louis-Philippe and developed during the period of the Second Empire under Napoleon III.

Vincent van Gogh, the Post-Impressionist artist started his career painting Realist subject matter, such as peasant labourers, before moving on to creating more expressive and emotionally intense works. This highlights how the Realism movement laid the foundation for later art movements, inspiring artists to explore new ways of depicting reality.
Van Gogh’s career came to an abrupt end when he died on July 29, 1890, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. By the time of his death, the paintings he had shown in recent exhibitions in Paris and Brussels had begun to command the interest of artists and critics.
