Reading fluency is assessed using oral reading fluency (ORF) measures. ORF assessments measure reading rate and accuracy and are expressed in terms of the number of words read correctly per minute (wcpm).
Reading Fluency Practice Activities. Fluency = The ability to read accurately, quickly, and with appropriate intonation and expression. Accuracy = 80-95% correct in connected text. Rate = As quickly as possible, without sacrificing comprehension. This will depend on text and purpose for reading.
Check out a video in which fifth graders demonstrate fluent reading. Watch as they read smoothly, at a natural speed, and with expression. Notice that fifth graders self correct and can answer comprehension questions about what they have read.
Use the rate recommendations from the table with the Fluency Practice Passages and Fluency Timed Reading assessments to help determine whether students are making progress toward or nearing grade-level standards for oral reading fluency.
