Lesson 47. Engagement Text: Students use knowledge of phoneme segmentation to isolate and identify the initial, middle, and final sound in a word. As they identify each sound, they must connect it to its written representation (grapheme) and practice proper letter formation using a skywriting technique.
Grade 1: Module 2: Cycle 9 Lesson 48 Teaching Notes Purpose of lesson and alignment to standards: In this lesson, students continue working with double consonant endings (“ll,” “ss,” “zz,” “ff”). During Work Time A, students connect phonemes and graphemes by writing and blending the sounds that they hear in words.
During the first few cycles of Module 2, students continue to focus on single-syllable words with two and three phonemes. By Cycle 9, students are introduced to new grapheme-phoneme connections with familiar sounds, represented by two letters instead of one (examples: /k/ as "-ck" and /f/ as "-ff").
