The Wayward Queen Attack is an offbeat opening in the King’s Pawn Opening, commencing with the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5. Over the years, it has garnered various names, sometimes referred to as the Parham Attack or Danvers opening. Its earliest recorded instance dates back to 1875.
Qh5. White develops the queen as early as move two, putting black’s e5 pawn under attack. Often this is played by beginners with the aim of achieving the infamous “four move checkmate,” but no less than World Champion Magnus Carlsen has given it a try in a tournament!

28 gru 2023 · Qh5 is actually the resulting pressure on f7 after White plays 3. Bc4; the f7-pawn is guarded only by Black's king and is considered Black’s weakest pawn at the beginning of the game. The safest option for Black is to play 2…Nc6, which guards the e-pawn and prepares 3…g6.
28 kwi 2024 · Qxe5+! creating a deadly fork to the king and the rook and thus loses that h8 rook. If, however, White blunders and Black plays well, the Queen may be trapped near h8, but this is unlikely. Instead of playing 2…g6??, 2…Nc6 defends the e-pawn and gives Black a very slight edge due to White’s misplaced queen.

20 cze 2023 · At this point, black can no longer afford to maintain symmetry (5...Qxe5 6. Qxe5+ and black is down a queen for no compensation). Instead, 5...d6 offers a pawn for some compensation. While it is unclear if it is objectively enough, it offers non-trivial practical chances.
