29 lis 2023 · The following medications were addressed in the inquiries (n = 97): meclizine (51%), metoclopramide (33%), promethazine (16%), ondansetron (9%), and others (6%). The breastfed child was older than 6 months and 1 year in 96% and 71% of the inquiries, respectively.
Breastfeeding while taking promethazine: Studies have not been done to see if promethazine can get into breastmilk. Promethazine can cause sleepiness in adults and might have the same effect in a nursing baby.
Three principles govern discussions of drug therapy during lactation: (a) most drugs administered to the lactating woman pass into her breast- milk; (b) most medications can be found in very small amounts in breastmilk; and (c) few drugs are contraindicated during lactation.
Even without specific medication data from human studies, a good understanding of the kinetic principles and mechanisms of medication entry into breast milk can help a clinician make an informed decision that often allows the mother to continue breastfeeding while treating her medical condition.
