Simon Stevin (1548–1620) discovered the hydrostatic paradox that the downward pressure of a liquid is independent of the shape of the vessel, and depends only on its height. Stevin was probably the first to work with the concept of pressure, having lived entirely before Pascal or Bernoulli.
