4 mar 2022 · Prairie alumroot’s large, maplelike leaves look outstanding massed in a bed of sedge or bunchgrass, and in fall and winter its leaves can take on hues of bright red and copper that catch the light well.
This plant tolerates more sun in the northern reaches of its native range. Partial shade is preferred in hot, dry, or more southern climates. Prairie Alumroot has relatively shallow roots and benefits from having a winter mulch applied – especially in cool weather climates.

Small, inconspicuous green flowers bloom along flowering stalks up to 3 ft tall. Dark-green leaves grow from the plant base to less than 1 ft tall. Plants filled in the study area in their third year of growth, and bloomed throughout June.
