Make sure you have your valid PR card. Renew your PR card before leaving Canada. If you need your application processed urgently, check if you qualify for urgent processing. Even if you qualify for urgent processing, we can’t guarantee that you’ll get your PR card on time.
Apply through the Permanent Residence Portal. To apply for a permanent resident (PR) card, you must submit a complete application package including all required forms. If your application is incomplete or missing information or documents, we’ll return it to you.
If your permanent resident (PR) card is expired or will expire in less than 9 months, you can apply for a new card. The new card will have a new expiration date. Most new PR cards are valid for 5 years.

What to do if you don’t have a valid PR card or your card is about to expire. If youre outside Canada: apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada. If you want to leave Canada: renew your PR card before you leave. If you don’t get your card in time, apply for a PRTD from outside Canada.
