It's actually quite easy (and fast!) to trade with yourself: Start a 2nd save (you can have pretty much infinite saves in parallel). Play until the 2nd town, it's like 3 trainers, including Theo. Open your main save in a 2nd window. On both saves, go to Poke Center -> GTS (top left).

Start new game, same steps as before, Find the intro and tutorial interesting but a bit tedious now, but pick a different starter from the first. Now. When you get to the GTS, put your starter up in trade for one of the two you caught on your first save. Once done, F12.
