The Smali Patcher method worked great for me, although I use GPS Joystick instead of "Fake GPS Routes Go" as its free and simpler to use. I have a Redmi Note 9 Pro. For anyone interested, first I unlocked the boot loader, next I rooted the phone with Magisk.

Try clearing the data from the Google Play Store app and make sure you have mock locations in the developer settings set to whichever GPS app you are using to spoof. And reboot. This is what I was able to do to get it working.
From here you are free to use safely use apps that spoof your location. I have the "GPS Joystick" app as a basic gps spoofer, but there are others out there as well. I only recommend using apps that use the native pokemon go client.
