PlayOn does a good job for me. Audials is a possibility. They offer free samples periodically, but the samples are of limited capability. They also come out with a new version annually. This means I doubt they update the previous version whenever the streaming site breaks something.
As frames of reference, TabloTV can record OTA 1080i broadcasts at ~6000 kbps and they look similar to what I just recorded on PlayOn Home. The best recordings I ever made were with the old Windows Media Center .wtv format, in which 1080p recordings could be made at as high as 9000+ kbps.
In addition, you can sign up for a month with a service and get shows that might cost $20 per season for $5-7 total. You could probably record it before the free trial is up, but I do support the channel for a period to give them at least some financial gain from their service.
(Another solution is Vue, which has all my must-have channels and commercial-free DVR, but it is $60 more per year, and commercial-free DVR is not worth that extra money, in my opinion.) Two days ago, PlayOn released its latest update, as announced on https://www.playon.tv/releasenotes .
If a 60 minute TV show shows twice in listings, once at 58 minutes and the other at 52 minutes, the longer one is probably loaded up with ads, so record the other one. Overall, PlayOn Cloud is a much more reliable service and produces better, more even results.
I love the idea of PlayOn because it allowed me to save all my videos in Plex so I can download all my stuff anywhere and watch it offline. I’m still on the free 3 month trial because I have a lifetime license but damn it seems like because it’s only recording the show actually playing it would be more reliable then that.
