Ovid’s story of Philomela, the virginal girl raped by her brother-in-law Tereus and subjected to the removal of her tongue, is perhaps surprising in its popularity with early modern writers.
Greek dramatist Sophocles made this version famous. In Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses Procne becomes the swallow and Philomela the nightingale. Ovid’s version influenced later literature. The word Philomel, a poetic name for nightingale, derived from this myth.
