Petroglyphs, or rock carvings, remain as evidence of their beliefs, and give clues to understanding the lives of these people who are believed to have inhabited the area around A.D. 1000. The park contains the largest group of petroglyphs yet discovered in Missouri.

Have you ever seen a petroglyph? At Washington State Park in central Missouri, you can see some that were created by the Mississippian Indian Tribe in 1,000 A.D. The large petroglyph site is at the north entrance to the park and the smaller site is next to the interpretive center.
