I am currently reinvested in this story as I’ve bought the novel and just finished it today, after first reading it over ten years ago when it was fresh on Reddit - it has stayed in my mind all these years and I thoroughly enjoyed it again.
Dathan Auerbach had a more subtle approach in Penpal, I had to revisit the story a few times to fully understand what happened, and I really loved this choice. The reader becomes the unknown protagonist while trying to figure out what happened, just like a beautiful but tragic puzzle.

Penpal by Dathan Auerbach : r/horrorlit. I absolutely adored this book. It is listed as "one of the scariest books ever" or something, and while it is definitely not that, it is an amazing read. I think the reason people think its so scary is because it is very much a "real life" book.
Postcrossing is a good place to find penpals. The main website is about postcards, but if you go to the forums you can find penpals and, overall, a nice and safe community! That’s where I got mine. 😊
