1 lut 2005 · Phencyclidine (PCP) (Figure 1) was first developed as a surgical anesthetic. Despite its useful efficacy, widespread clinical use was not possible because, after surgery, patients experienced hallucinations, disordered speech, delirium, agitation and disoriented behavior.
Phencyclidine (PCP), a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, induces psychotomimetic effects in humans and animals. Administration of PCP to rodents is used as a preclinical model for schizophrenia; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the symptoms remain largely unknown.
