I'm watching voyager and neelix says something about parsecs (I cant remember the line). Correct me if I'm wrong, but is a parsec not earth relative, and having lived only in the delta quadrant, how would he know about the distance and how to calculate something invented by such distant people?
Well, no, a definition is easy: a parsec is defined as “the distance at which 1 AU subtends an angle of one arcsecond”, 1 AU being 1 Astronomical Unit, i.e. the average distance between Earth and the Sun. It’s understanding what the definition of a parsec actually means that’s the tricky part!
