It is easy to see that from a 3-2-1 formation you can move up the two full-backs and make a 1-4-1. From a 2-3-1 you can move up one of the defenders to get the same result. Of course, the opposite is also true, which makes the 1-4-1 a very flexible formation that I think is a bit underused.
