It was only in 1960 that the Queen first appeared on a Bank of England note, accompanied on the reverse by a stylised image of Britannia. Britannia, an allegorical female representation of Britain, had always appeared on Bank of England notes in a vignette based on the Bank’s seal.
These idealised women represented the nation, embodied military victories and symbolised literary and musical inspiration. Before 1975, the only women to appear on banknotes were symbolic or allegorical figures.

Out of the major nations examined, Sweden, Australia, and Denmark are the only ones that have achieved gender parity on their banknotes, with women’s faces making up at least 50% of the total faces featured.
