The incipit of a hymn tune consists of its opening notes. Here, as in the Oxford Hymn Tune Index and other scholarly resources, an incipit is encoded by digits, each digit representing one note of the scale. Hymns can be search by name and by its HTI number; by title; by lyrics; by the name of a compiler; and by composer. Temperley's work has produced the four-volume printed Hymn Tune Index published by Oxford University Press (1998); revisions to it can be found here.
This essay will explore the questions of who printed hymn tunes and why; whose behaviour was to be changed and in what ways; how, in detail, the published sources attempted to achieve their goals; and how far they were successful.
