For unique loot in your name, the drop rate is 1/43 times <% damage dealt during kill>. If you do 25% of the damage for a kill, your unique chance will be 1/172. If you’re the mvp you get a 10% boost, so if you do 25% of the damage and get mvp, you’ll have a ~1/156 drop rate.

Mvp gives a slight boost to regular loot and also think it gives a slight boost to unique rate but the figures above are basically what you’re dealing with. Assuming it's not bugged again, you get a chance depending on your contribution to roll on an unique, mvp gets a boost to the chance.
drop rate is proportional to your damage. you do 10% of damage (on nex, and minions total) you get (1/10) * (1/43). if you get mvp you get an additional 10% bonus on your dmg, so like 11% instead of 10%.
Players without it may opt to equip other affiliated items by quickly equipping them as the NPC dies, as essence count is counted upon their drops appearing; doing so will allow a maximum of 10 Zarosian items to be equipped, guaranteeing two essence count per kill.
