PSMI (idiopathic incontinence, hormone-responsive incontinence) is the most common and important acquired cause of incontinence in dogs. It largely is a condition of spayed female dogs, but in some breeds incontinence may precede ovariohysterectomy (OHE).
Phenylpropanolamine is effective at improving continence in dogs with USMI, although routine blood pressure monitoring should be performed and special consideration should be taken for animals with behavioral concerns.
Diagnosis. Dogs usually present either as puppies with congenital UI or as adults with acquired UI6. Unilateral or bilateral ectopic ureter is the most commonly reported cause of UI in puppies (<6 months). Urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI) is the most common condition in adult dogs, with neutered females being over-represented6.
