Very similar in appearance to closely related Ermines and care must be taken with identification. Can be seen in large numbers both as a caterpillar and adult moth, often coming to light. Also seen in the daytime at rest on the foodplant. Flight Season Flies at night from June to August in a single generation.
Yponomeuta padella (orchard ermine) is a lepidopteran from the family Yponomeutidae, the ermine moths. It is also known as the cherry ermine. The wingspan ranges from 19 to 22 millimetres (3 ⁄ 4 to 7 ⁄ 8 in). The head is white.
23 maj 2014 · The most likely culprit is a harmless caterpillar. Webs have already been seen in parts of Dorset in the last week or so. These striking and obvious webs hide hundreds and sometimes tens of thousands of caterpillars of a group of moths called the Small Ermine moths.
The larvae feed on blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hawthorn (Crataegus) and cherry (Prunus spp), and like its relatives lives gregariously in a silken web. It is fairly common over most of the British Isles, and flies in July and August, when it is attracted to light.
Ermine moths are small to medium-sized moths varying in wingspan from 8 to 31 mm (0.3 to 1.2 in). The heads mostly have smooth scales, the haustellum is naked and the labial palps are curved upwards. The maxillary palps usually consist of one or two segments.
