Scales and scale degrees. A scale is a succession of pitches ascending or descending in steps. There are two types of steps: half steps and whole steps. A half step (H) consists of two adjacent pitches on the keyboard. A whole step (W) consists of two half steps.
Music Scale Degrees. Each note of the scale is described by its numerical place in the sequence. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. There are also some more technical names for them: 1st = tonic. 2nd = supertonic. 3rd = mediant. 4th = subdominant. 5th = dominant. 6th = submediant.

17 lip 2024 · A scale is a sequence of musical notes ordered by pitch. It serves as a framework for creating melodies and harmonies. The most widely used scales in Western music are the major and minor scales. Each scale follows a specific pattern of intervals (the distance between notes), which gives it a unique sound and mood.
We would consider two scales to be "near" each other, if they bear many similarities; sharing many of the same notes, such that it would take few mutations to turn one into the other. This distance measured by mutation is almost the same thing as a "Levenshtein Distance".
A Chromatic Scale is a musical scale that includes all twelve pitches of the Western musical octave, each a half step apart. Unlike major or minor scales, which are diatonic and consist of whole and half steps in a specific pattern, the chromatic scale is built entirely of half steps (semitones).
One variation of the minor scale is called the HARMONIC MINOR and it has only one alteration – but a very important one – that distinguishes it from other minor scales. The 7th scale degree is raised one half-step creating a dissonance between certain tones within the scale.
