20 lut 2024 · The Olmec art style is recognized for its colossal heads sculpted from basalt, intricate jade figurines, and other artifacts illustrating a mastery of various mediums. Characterized by its depictions of both human and animal deities, Olmec artwork often features baby-faced figures, glyphs, and symbolism indicative of their religion and cosmology.
The Olmec, whose heartland was located in present-day Mexico from 1200-400 B.C., excelled in creating fine greenstone sculptures. The almost flesh-like quality of the nose and parted lips belie the hardness of the stone from which this mask was made.
Olmec art extends well beyond these monumental sculptures. Small jade figurines and intricately carved objects reveal a variety of themes, including supernatural beings, animals, and anthropomorphic representations.
